2015 Business Hall of Fame Honorees

Jim Breaux

Jim Breaux PEMCO Equipment Inc.

Jim Breaux has worked hard to keep his family business successful. In 1962 Jim’s father, Baxter Breaux, started Permian Engineering & Manufacturing Corporation. In 1986, the name was changed to PEMCO Equipment Inc. and Jim took over running the company. PEMCO offers oilfield equipment, and they are especially known for masts on well service rigs. These masts have a reputation for quality, design, workmanship and dependability, and they can be found on all continents except Antarctica.

Jim graduated from Permian High School in 1971 and attended Odessa College and Southwest Texas State where he studied Business. He is active in the Permian Basin Petroleum Association, Odessa Downtown Rotary Club and the Odessa College Foundation. Jim currently serves on the board of directors for the Permian Basin Rehab Center, Grow Odessa and the Odessa Development Corporation. He is a past board member of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and enjoys golfing, traveling, snow skiing and music, especially at Wagner Noël.

Jim and his wife Debbie have been married for 10 years. He has four children: Katie, Kandi, Claire and Bethany. Jim also has three grandchildren and one on the way.

Robert M. Chavez

Robert M. Chavez Permian Machinery Movers, Inc.

Robert M. Chavez opened Permian Machinery Movers, Inc. in February 1981. They have 64 employees and offer forklift rental and service as well as heavy machinery moving. The most unique thing about the business is that it is a true family business. The company employs three of Robert’s uncles, three of his nephews and they have employees who have been with the company for 20 years.

“Our mission at Permian Machinery Movers is to incorporate our expertise, honesty and resourcefulness to achieve service to the highest standard and to provide our customers a service with the best quality.”

After serving in the Air Force, Robert attended Odessa College and UTPB where he studied business. He is very involved in the community and volunteers for the Permian Basin Rehab Center, Permian Basin Mission Center, I & D, the Gideons and Community Bible Study (CBS).  He also sits on the Odessa Chamber of Commerce Board, LEAP Board and Ector County Appraisal District Board. In the past he served on the Odessa Development Corporation board and was named Hispanic Chamber Businessman in 2003.

Robert has been married to his wife Aracely for 20 years and they have three children: Ariana, Amanda and Samantha. They also have one granddaughter named Alyssa.

Josefina Hooker

Josefina Hooker Freedom Buick, GMC Trucks, Inc

Josefina R. Hooker was born in Santiago, Cuba and moved to the United States in 1968 with her mother, grandparents and two brothers. Josefina attended the National Automobile Dealers Association Academy and became president of Freedom Buick GMC Truck, Inc. after purchasing the dealership in 2001.

“Purchasing a vehicle is a very exciting time and it is nice to share the excitement with our customers,” said Hooker. “Every day we strive to achieve our goal of serving the people of this community by offering them our sincerity, our honesty and our friendship.”

Josefina has a great passion for giving back to the community and helping those in need. She has volunteered for the Education Foundation and Girl Scouts, and currently volunteers with Safe Kids. In addition she has served on the Board of Directors for  ODC, Education Foundation, Goodwill, GM Womens Retail Initiative and the Junior League of Odessa Advisory Board.

Married to her husband Albert for 36 years, they have two children and two grandchildren.

Kenneth & Jo Lunceford

Kenneth & Jo Lunceford Slip Service Company

Kenneth Lunceford started his career at Slip Service Company in 1961 as a machinist trainee.  He worked his way through all operations, and became shop foreman in 1978.  Mr. Lunceford became owner and CEO of Slip Service Co in 1996. Throughout the years Slip Service has been a manufacturer of well service tools and a distributor for numerous companies in the market segment. Jo Lunceford became co-owner and Vice President of Slip Service Company in 1996.

Mr. Lunceford has been active in the Permian Basin community including 20 plus years coaching youth athletics as well as 4 years as League President of the Odessa Little League Baseball organization.  He has been a strong supporter of the local community, non-profit groups, and both Odessa High and Permian High School booster clubs.

Mrs. Lunceford exemplifies the Permian Basin culture and demonstrated community leadership throughout her life.  She is currently an active member of the Progressive Study Club where she is the editor of the monthly Progressive Study Club Newsletter.

Kenneth and Jo have lived in Odessa for the entire lives and are proud to call Odessa their home.  They have three sons, Craig Lunceford (Nashville, TN), Shane Lunceford (Saginaw, TX), and Brent Lunceford (Austin, TX). They also have five grandchildren ranging in ages 11-23.  Their grandchildren include Lexi, Reece, Cliff, Mackenzie and Tyler.

Larry L. Melton

Larry L. Melton Johnson, Miller & Co., CPA's PC

Larry L. Melton is beginning his 18th year as CEO of Johnson, Miller & Co., CPA’s PC. The full service regional public accounting firm was opened in 1937 and has offices in Odessa, Midland and Hobbs, NM.

Larry graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. He started his career as a staff engineer at Phillips Petroleum Co. Larry then entered the banking business and served in the industry for 30 years in various roles, including president of two banks.

Extremely active in the community, Larry has served on numerous boards, including the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Odessa and Odessa & Midland Jaycees. From 1999 – 2001 he served on the Odessa City Council, and from 2001 – 2012 he served as Mayor of Odessa. Larry has received numerous awards and honors. He has been awarded the Bill Elms United Way Award, Boy Scouts Man-of-the-Year Award, Hispanic Chamber Amistad Award and was named Odessa’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

Larry and his wife J’Nevelyn reside in Odessa and will be celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary in September. They have two children, Julie Melton Porter and Jeff L. Melton, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
